Received June 27, 1977; Differential diagnosis of early breast cancer was performed by various echographic display techniques such as a sensitivity graded method, gray scale echography and the expanded echography of two dimensional (B-scan) ultrasonography on 541 cases. The clinical significance of gray scale expanded echography for target enlargement was evaluated for early breast cancer on 37 cases histologically verified. Differential criteria for this technique is reported and bio-acoustic mechanisms for the appearance of such differential points are discussed. Diagnostic accuracy rate improved for early breast cancer below 2.0 cm in size, while the false positive rate remained the same.
