"JJCO Paper of the Year"

The Foundation for Promotion of Cancer Research, the publisher of the Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology, established the "JJCO Award: Paper of the Year" in 2004 to commend a high quality article published in the journal each year.

Among the 81 original papers published in 2004, the editorial board selected* the following paper for the award and announced at the editorial meeting held at Sapporo during the 64th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Cancer Association on September 14, 2005.

Dr Shoichiro Tsugane received the prize on behalf of the authors, and commented that the award was especially meaningful for them because the study was solid "sober" descriptive epidemiology that usually did not much attract clinicians.

3 Nikkei Disease Prevention Center, Santa Cruz Hospital Research Center, São Paulo, Brazil

*The selection process was as follows: (1) Among the original articles published in issues No. 1 to No. 12 of volume 34, Oxford University Press listed the top 20 papers with high numbers of internet downloads of its PDF version during the first 6 months after its online publication. (2) Apart from this, Associate Editors were encouraged to recommend articles of their choice. (3) The list of the above papers was sent to the editorial board as candidates of the award, and the vote took place via e-mail by 45 editors in August 2005.
