Among the 86 original papers published in 2005, the editorial board selected the following paper for the award and announced on September 29, 2006 at the JJCO Reviewer Board Meeting of the 65th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Cancer Association in Yokohama, Japan.

- Among the original articles published in issues No.1 to No.12 of volume 35, Oxford University Press listed the top 20 papers with the highest number of internet downloads of their PDF version during the first 6 months after online publication.
- At the same time, Associate Editors selected the best papers that were published in volume 35.

Associate Editors voted the best paper(s), at most three, from among i) and ii).
In 2004, the Foundation for Promotion of Cancer Research instituted a "Paper of the Year" award for the paper designated as the most outstanding of the original articles published in JJCO the previous year.
The purpose of the award is to promote excellence in research in clinical oncology, to encourage the submission of such works of high quality to JJCO and to honor outstanding papers published in JJCO.
